While visiting Greece, Mitsumasa Kido meets a man about to take his last breath. Taking advantage of his last moments, the latter reveals to him to be the Golden Saint of Sagittarius. Between his arms, he holds a baby named Saori whom he presents as the reincarnation of the goddess Athena. Although surprised by his revelations, Mitsumasa Kido knows that he has little time. Before the Knight of the Zodiac dies, he makes him the promise to protect the girl.
Back in Japan, he sponsors the training of 100 orphans in the hope of making them Bronze Saints. Among them, Seiya, Shiryu, Hyôga, Shun and Ikki will be noticed by their prowess. While they are only 16 years old, their mastery of Cosmos makes them the knights of Pegasus, Dragon, Swan, Andromeda and Phoenix. But as they celebrate their victories, an evil lurking in the shadows awakens... Under the influence of the Great Pope, the silver knights attack Saori, convinced that she is a usurper.
During a fight, Athena's heart is pierced by a golden arrow. She has only twelve hours to live unless the Bronze Saints manage to find the cure within the sanctuary. For Seiya and his companions, this is the beginning of an adventure that will bring them face to face with the twelve fearsome Golden Saints.
