The DC Comics World and Its Superheroes
The DC Comics world, sometimes abbreviated as DCU (DC Universe), was born out of the American comic book craze in the 1930s. It is an imaginary world taken from the comics published by DC Comics. It follows the evolution of superheroes with superpowers, facing super villains, a kind of meta-humans, in a continuous struggle.
How Did the DC Comics World Come About?
DC Comics takes its name from the publishing house Detective Comics, to whom it owes its famous initials DC. In 1941, it joined forces with two other publishing houses, National Allied Publications and All-American Publications. The three decided to pool their catalogs. From this merger was born DC Comics. The characters created by these publishers form a team of superheroes, the Justice Society. Superman, the first real superhero, hides a flashy costume under an ordinary appearance. This process is reminiscent of characters from pulp literature, such as The Phantom or Zorro. Batman and Wonder Woman form the other two elements of the DC trinity. They are confronted with enemies such as Lex Luthor, the Joker or Cheetah. Other superheroes will follow. We can mention the most popular ones like Flash, Green Lantern, Aquaman and Green Arrow.
These superheroes evolve in the DC Multiverse, a kind of cosmic structure that unites the fictional worlds where the stories published by DC Comics take place. This meta-space will undergo several evolutions. In 1985, it disappeared with the merging of the last five Earths into one, in the maxi-series Crisis on Infinite Earths (or Crisis). Infinite Crisis, published in 2006, marks the return of the Multiverse with 52 distinct parallel universes. Finally, the Flashpoint saga of 2011, resets all 52 universes.
Why Has the DC Comics World Become a Must-Read?
Long reserved for the geek sphere, the DC Comics world is now appealing to an ever-growing audience thanks to the magic of Hollywood. This film industry has taken hold of superheroes since the 2000s, to make them iconic figures. Film adaptations have been entrusted to renowned directors such as Richard Donner, Tim Burton, Christopher Nolan and Zack Snyder. This success has translated into the manufacture of a wide range of officially licensed merchandise.
